Big Nerd Ranch Offers Opportunity to go from Beginner to Expert with Ruby and Ruby On Rails Bootcamp, April 25-May 1, 2009

You may not know Jack, but after seven days at the Big Nerd Ranch, you will know Ruby.

Ruby on Rails has become one of the most widely sought-after technologies for creating elegant, easily deployed sites and applications for the web, but for many, the ability to leverage the full power of the framework remain out of reach without a deeper understanding of the Ruby language. Big Nerd Ranch, Inc., premier provider of intensive classes for web developers, programmers and system administrators, solves that problem with its recently created Ruby and Ruby on Rails Bootcamp, April 25-May 1. This seven-day class starts with a two-day intensive introduction to the Ruby language, designed to prime students to unleash the power of Ruby on the Rails framework in the next five days.

"Now more than ever, it's important for programmers to demonstrate a diverse knowledge base," said Aaron Hillegass, Big Nerd Ranch, Inc. founder and president. "Ruby and Ruby on Rails Bootcamp offers an opportunity to quickly master object-oriented programming through Ruby and immediately apply that knowledge into one of the most dynamic and popular web development frameworks available."

Big Nerd Ranch, Inc. is pleased to introduce new instructor, Brian Hardy, who will provide the Ruby training in the first two days of the bootcamp. Brian, who boasts an extensive background in development turned his curiosity and skills to mastering Ruby on Rails upon its introduction. He brings his real world experience developing applications on and off the Web, for projects ranging from the tiniest shell script to massive content-driven web sites such as CNN.com, to the Ruby class. The Ruby portion of the class moves fast and provides intensive instruction to transform the novice programmer into a master of object-oriented programming in Ruby.

By the end of the first two days, students will be able to:
  • Understand the fundamental concepts of object-oriented programming
  • Run code using the interactive Ruby shell and the Ruby interpreter
  • Understand objects, methods, and classes, and define classes and equip them with attributes and actions
  • Test code and download and install Ruby libraries
The Ruby on Rails training class is taught by veteran instructor and Ruby on Rails developer Charles Brian Quinn and will transfer the knowledge gained in the beginning of the week to developing sophisticated web applications with rich and dynamic interfaces.

The Big Nerd Ranch incorporates intensive training classes for Unix and Mac OS X programmers in a retreat setting outside Atlanta, GA. Class price of $4300 includes lodging, all meals, original instruction materials, 24-hour lab access, and transportation to and from the Atlanta airport. Students are encouraged to bring independent projects to class, allowing for input from classmates and individual instructor attention. Polaricon Releases Graphical Performance Tool for MySQL

Polaricon has released its new graphical profiling software for the MySQL database server, Jet Profiler for MySQL. The software monitors MySQL databases and provides detailed load information in real-time. It is platform neutral, works on virtually all MySQL versions and is available both as a free version and a professional version for $99 at http://www.jetprofiler.com.

Jet Profiler for MySQL provides detailed information about the heaviest sql queries and users. In addition, it displays replication, network and I/O statistics as well as information about table usage, slow queries and lock contention. Through a graphical interface, the user is able to browse through profiling information very easily and zoom in on problem areas, such as spikes in load. This allows developers and database administrators to quickly identify and fix performance problems in their applications.

"We expect a lot of developers will be interested in this tool," says Björn Melinder, founder of Polaricon. "Most existing tools are hard to learn, text-based or expensive. We provide a new alternative that is both efficient, inexpensive and easy-to-use."

Building PhotoKast: Creating an iPhone app in one month

In the spirit of Guy Kawasaki's Truemors experiment, Ten 23 Software challenged themselves to create a social networking iPhone app - from concept to development to distribution - in 30 days. This includes coding the servers, clients, spatial implementation (PhotoKast is an LBS app), etc. This document is a combination of what they have learned over the last four years in mobile development, and how that was applied to the making of PhotoKast. It is not a How-To guide on coding; it addresses the other parts of development, with an emphasis on design and planning.

What is a Trigger?

A database trigger is procedural code that is automatically executed in response to certain events on a particular table in a database. Triggers can restrict access to specific data, perform logging, or audit access to data.

There are two classes of triggers, they are either "row triggers" or "statement triggers". With row triggers you can define an action for every row of a table, while statement triggers only occur once and are not dependent on the shape of the data.

Each class can be of several types. There are "BEFORE triggers" and "AFTER triggers" which alters the time of execution of the trigger. There is also an "INSTEAD OF trigger" which is a conditional trigger that will fire instead of the triggering statement.

There are typically three triggering EVENTS that cause trigger to 'fire':
  • INSERT event (as a new record is being inserted into the database).
  • UPDATE event (as a record is being changed).
  • DELETE event (as a record is being deleted).
Oracle 9i allows you to create triggers on schemas and databases also. You can create a trigger for creating or altering or dropping a schema object.Triggers can also be created for logging in and logging out of databases.

Schema Level Triggers
  • Before Create
  • After Create
  • Before Alter
  • After Alter
  • Before Drop
  • After Drop
  • After Logon
  • Before Logoff
The major features and effects of database triggers are that they:
  • do not accept parameters or arguments
  • can commit/rollback only through autonomous transactions
  • can cause mutating table errors, if they are poorly written.

What is ebXML?

Electronic Business using eXtensible Markup Language, commonly known as e-business XML, or ebXML (pronounced ee-bee-ex-em-el) as it is typically referred to as, is a family of XML based standards sponsored by OASIS and UN/CEFACT whose mission is to provide an open, XML-based infrastructure that enables the global use of electronic business information in an interoperable, secure and consistent manner by all trading partners.

ebXML was published in 1999 as an initiative of the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) and the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). The original project envisioned five layers of data specification, including XML standards for:
  • Business processes,
  • Collaboration protocol agreements,
  • Core data components,
  • Messaging, &
  • Registries and repositories

ebXML is not itself a standard, rather, it is a container for several key specification standards administered by UN/CEFACT and OASIS. Key ebXML standards include ebXML Messaging Services, ebXML Registry, ebXML Business Process Specification Schema and ebXML Collaboration Protocol Profile and Agreement.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has approved the following five ebXML specifications as the ISO 15000 standard, under the general title, Electronic business eXtensible markup language:
  • ISO 15000-1: ebXML Collaborative Partner Profile Agreement
  • ISO 15000-2: ebXML Messaging Service Specification
  • ISO 15000-3: ebXML Registry Information Model
  • ISO 15000-4: ebXML Registry Services Specification
  • ISO 15000-5: ebXML Core Components Technical Specification, Version 2.01
OASIS technical committees and UN/CEFACT retain the responsibility for maintaining and advancing the above specifications.

The freebXML.org initiative was established to promote development and adoption of ebXML-based open-source software.
